Winter Gilwell – It Does What It Says On The Packet
Nine Rotherham Explorers together with four leaders left a snow covered Rotherham and headed to Gilwell for the annual winter event a few days after the whole country had ground to a halt due to the bad weather. Arriving after midnight presented a new challenge to many of the Explorers as tents had to be pitched not only in darkness but in snow and on frozen ground as well.
Dawn on Saturday failed to bring any respite from the cold conditions as sub-zero temperatures combined with a stiff breeze meant that on many of the rides Explorers had to remove their boots, lest they get snow/ice all over them! The on-site caterers did a roaring business supplying hot food and drinks. The evening finished with an excellent disco.
Sunday morning was considerably warmer and the site was struck much easier than we expected and they made their way home.
Next stop Gilwell 24 in July.
