CSA Platinum Expedition (D of E Silver)
Paul (Admin) on Tuesday 05 May 2009 - 21:00:00 | Comments are turned off for this item
Following previous problems in putting on the CSA Platinum Expedition (D of E Silver) the fact that Jenny was ill the week before didn't surprise anyone. Fortunately she recovered sufficiently to take part, sadly Danny had school commitments. So it was a happy band of four who met up with Dave Humphries, Helen and myself at the car park at the foot of Deepdale. Food promptly stuffed in every spare space in the rucsacs (and Nathan's pockets) and off they drudged uphill.
I met them at Monyash for the one and only time that day before they set off for Lathkill Dale (all agreed that this was nice but a little boring) - the sun shone and all were happy when they arrived in Birchover. Sadly there followed a disturbed night's sleep, not caused by the 100+ other D of E groups, but by the party that went on all night next to us!
Sunday dawned well and the intrepid four set off over Stanton Moor (stone circle) and passed the disputed quarry area (no sign of protestors) before what they all agreed was the most pleasant section through Chatsworth Park.
The overnight halt was at the Eric Byne Site near Baslow and proved a total contrast to the Birchover site with limited facilities, no other people and a poultry nesting in the toilet! Blisters were checked and treated before a night spent fending off pasty eating sheep.
The final day proved to be the longest with, firstly, a long haul along the Gritstone Edges and then a valley walk by the side of the Derwent before finally arriving at Ladybower Dam and journey's end.
Within this trip out of the way all four of them started to plan towards their QS expeditions.

Rotherham Explorer Scouts – Gearstones weekend a Runaway Success
Paul (Admin) on Sunday 01 March 2009 - 19:14:00 | Comments are turned off for this item
Rotherham Explorers headed into the Yorkshire Dales, for a celebration weekend, for Malcolm who is celebrating 25 years and a Leader in the Movement. The weekend superbly planned by Michael aided by Dave, Gary, Nick, Alex, John, Helen, Malcolm, Dom, and Paul.
The action packed weekend, included Hiking, Caving and Partying. One Explorer emerging from her first Caving Trip said “That was Amazing, I’ve got to go again”. Groups were able to ‘bag’ some of the best know Yorkshire Peaks.
One of the highlights of the weekend was the Evening Meal, Presentation and Party for Malcolm. Making the event more memorable was the production of a fantastic badge to commemorate the weekend.
Other notable events included Tom from the Brecks Unit gaining his Chiefs Scout Award and being presented with the Badge on Camp.
During the weekend many Explorers talked about doing the three Yorkshire Peaks. All I can say at this point it we as Leaders have picked up on this.
Photos from the weekend to follow soon – keep checking the site.

Valentine Run-around
Paul (Admin) on Sunday 15 February 2009 - 01:00:00 | Comments are turned off for this item
Teams of Explorers from Brecks, Maltby and Kiveton Park. Took part in this year’s Winter Run-around (Valentine Run-around).
This involves the Teams navigating their way round South Yorkshire using public transport.
They also had 10 bases around South Yorkshire to visit and earn up to 50 points, the teams also earn points based on distance travelled.
Despite some teams having problems with the Trains in the Sheffield area all the teams finished the event, which is open to both Explorers and Network Members.
Unfortunately none of the Rotherham team won, however and I suspect more importantly they all enjoyed themselves.
The event was well supported, and it was nice to have a visit from Mike Frost during the day, and help on the base in Kiveton from the Stephen our DC. Thanks very much to Sharon & Paul Unsworth and others for running the event –
hope to see you all again next year.
Even if there are only 10 types of people who understand binary – those that do and those that don’t ! – Paul

D of E Success!

D of E Success!
Well done and congratulations to Jenny, Nathan and Karl from Swallownest ESU on Gaining their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards. They have worked very hard to gain these awards.
Also Congratulations to Mark and Sam from Wales ESU in gaining their Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards, they completed their Expedition Section in Open Canoes on the River Trent.
This brings the total number of D of E Awards this year so far to nine, this also demonstrates the effectiveness of our cross unit approach to running the Award Scheme in Rotherham Explorer Scouts
